Off the Eaten Path

We’ve been away, so here’s an update

Wow, the summer is surely kicking our butts over here at OffTheEatenPath. We haven’t been reviewing a whole lot — the end of the summer tends to fill up quickly with plans, and not enough hours in the day. So we thought we would just send out a quick post to keep you filled in on what has been going on.

Maine. We took a trip into Boston and drove up the coast to Kennebunk, Maine, stopping at some of the best clam, shrimp, and lobster shacks in the state. Also did quite a few micro brew beer tastings. WOW. Had a delicious time. We posted a lot of our food pics on twitter, you should def check those out if you haven’t already.

Dogsitting. Had to dog sit a 13 month old shitzu who was the cutest thing in the world. But for fear of him tearing up the place, we ordered out to a delicious BBQ joint off on Lincoln in North Center, called “the original Smokin’ Woodies”. Holy crap this place was good. Two dinners with delivery and tip was roughly $35, but was so worth it. The portions they hook you up with are insane. Lois ordered the pulled pork, and they gave here A TON of pulled pork –  smoked and rubbed with some superb spices — served with side of beans (really really good), slaw (eh, kinda warm and disappointing), and fries. I on the other hand ordered the (surprise surprise) rib tip and chicken combo. The rib tips were really good quality. Not as much fat and knuckle as some of the other guys, and the BBQ sauce was in abundance and delicious. They claimed the chicken was two large wings, and they weren’t joking. Two LARGE wings BBQ’d with sauce, so nice and so saucey, and so flavorful. Good stuff. Instead of fries I got the whole red baby potatoes, as well as the slaw and beans. I would definitely order from this place again, if not, I’d def stop in to get a look at this place on the interior.

Went to a Pig Roast in Gilberts, Illinois. That was interesting to say the least. Its amazing how much meat can come from one pig, and it’s amazing there is a company you can hire to bring the mobile BBQ and the pig, and guys who wear big orange rubber gloves to tear this cooked pig apart. Good times had by all.

Halsted street market days. I’m pretty sure we only go to this so I can get the chicken on the stick, and Lois can get her fried pierogis.

MAN-B-QUE! (@ManBQue on twitter) Whoa. Been following these guys on Twitter, not really knowing too much about the actual event, until I went to their site, read the rules, watched some videos, and sent out an invitation request. Two days later, I was at my first ManBQue (Lois-less — woman aren’t allowed), met some great people, drank some excellent beers, and ate some amazing, amazing grilled meats. This event is surely a man’s event, with nicknames, no woman talk, all food talk. This event has a lot of  dudes who know their cuts of meat, know their seasonings, and know how to grill. Received free samples of Cat Daddy Spices from a really nice fellow named Ralph who also brought over a bag of chicken wings that he ended up grilling with his special seasonings. Check that guy’s spice out. It kicks some major ass. I’m definitely going to the next ManBQue meet up, no doubt!

Kuma’s Block party. Excellent metal, free Italian and Polish sausages all day, free pulled pork sandwiches all day. Great, great, great.

Well I think that pretty much somes up our inactivity on there for the past month, but have no fear, we are will be back next week with a few more reviews for the summer. Cheers!
